Alexandra Rigazzi-Tarling BMus. MMus. MCoSH MIPTI
Alexandra is a professionally trained Opera Singer with over 20 years international performance and teaching experience. She trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and the Zurich Opera Studio studying the workings of the human voice and its affect on the body and mind.
Alexandra has been a qualified Sound Therapist and Healer since 2010 and a Tutor for the College of Sound Healing since 2014 and offers Sound Therapy and Healing as a complementary therapy, as well as teaching courses and workshops on the subject, specialising in using the Voice as a healing tool.
Alexandra has taught singing and a system she calls Singing Therapy and Voice Reconnection®, throughout Europe as a workshop leader, working to promote the many benefits of singing for stress relief and other conditions such as Dystonia, Asperger's, and Dementia.
Alexandra has given workshops for the Dystonia Society in the UK, developing ways to ease symptoms of muscle spasms through using breath control and the voice, and also for the College of Sound Healing annual conferences, entitled, "Voice Your Sound" and "Voice Reconnection®".
In 2018/19 Alexandra completed levels 1-4, as well as the first year of the Estill Certified Master Teacher training and continues to advocate the need to understand the human voice and how it actually works based on scientific research. Much of this research to date was undertaken by Jo Estill whose philosophy was that, "everyone has a beautiful voice, they just have to know how to use it."
Alexandra has recently developed her knowledge of Vocal Anatomy and the Nervous System by undertaking dedicated training in the function of the Vagus Nerve. She was keen to formalise her knowledge and first hand experience of performance induced stress and her understanding of the voice as a tool for relaxation and Vagal Tone.
Alexandra believes that learning to breathe the way nature intended can prevent, and in some cases cure many illnesses and disorders, as well as promoting well-being, inner calm and focus in life when you need it most. Her voice work is particularly linked to continuous and appropriate breath flow as a means of promoting Wellbeing and unlocking the voice.
Alexandra holds an Honours Degree in Music and a Masters Degree in Music Performance, a Post Graduate Diploma in Vocal Training and a Practitioner and Tutor's Diploma in Sound Therapy with the College of Sound Healing.
Alexandra is a certified Reiki Master Teacher with the UK Reiki Federation and Assemblage Point Alignment Practitioner and has worked in the field of Meditation particularly with the use of Sound for well over a decade. Alexandra understands that for many people the concept of Sound Therapy and Singing might be something new and unknown. She is passionate about the positive effects that Sound and Music have on the human body and state of mind, from listening to a simple piece of music for relaxation and enjoyment to receiving a Sound Therapy treatment for a specific concern.
We all tend to hold negative emotions in our bodies, whether superficial from our day to day experiences, or deep rooted from our past. When we were babies we used to cry and scream to release our tension. What do we do as adults? As we grow, we tend to lose the primal connection between our emotions, body, voice and breath. Many people can't sing at all for fear of what might come out! Many have been told to be quiet, or that they are no good. For whatever reason, it is important that we realise that good health depends on our ability to feel and release temporary emotion that no longer serves us, otherwise it stays in the body and eventually manifests "dis-ease".
Alexandra also teaches people to breathe for relaxation through singing. In addition, singing provides a great work out for the body, as when done as nature intended, it engages all the muscles of the diaphragm and torso, as well as the legs and upper body, neck and head. Most importantly, it is fun and it boosts confidence, promoting self healing as you get to know and understand your voice. We all recognise the vocal sound of those around us, it's nothing to do with words, or the language they speak, it's the SOUND we recognise.
Alexandra teaches singing and vocal production without judgement! She can help you unlock and find your voice, free tension and let go. Whether you require a technical singing lesson, a singing lesson for fun, a singing lesson to recover or ease the symptoms of illness, or singing lesson to release old negative patterns which are causing you lack of well-being......look no further.
Learning to sing, is the art of allowing your body to do what it knows naturally.
All over the world groups and choirs are being set up in hospitals and centres because there is evidence to suggest that singing positively affects people with Alzheimer's, Dystonia, Parkinson's, Autism, MS, ME and more. See the Interesting Links page for further information.
Alexandra has always found it strange that despite the fact that Sound has been used for thousands of years in ancient cultures all over the world to cure and heal, the Western medical world is only recently accepting its power. For example, neurologists are fascinated by the incredible effects that singing has on the brain and are seeing positive links between neurological disorders and the use of the voice as it encourages right brain usage as well as left, in parts of the brain that continue to be undiscovered by the medical world.
Sound waves (Lithotripsy) are used in hospitals to break down kidney stones and very recently sound waves were used in clinical trials to target prostate cancer with a 90% success rate. Ultra "sound" has been allowing us to see babies in the womb for years (although perhaps not all that pleasant a sound for the baby!)
Not only this, but Western medical professionals are finally recognising that negative emotions such as stress, anxiety and our life style choices cause us to become ill. Regular exercise and deep breathing are prescribed for stress relief as well taking time out and listening to your favourite tunes to relax! Exercise and deep breathing happen when you sing and listening to your favourite music to relax...is a form of Sound Therapy! So not so weird after all!
When we apply concepts briefly taught to us in Physics classes at school, such as the fact that everything physical or solid as we perceive it is actually made up of vibrating atoms , and if we understand that everything that vibrates has a frequency, then we can only logically conclude that we too, appear solid but are in fact a collection of particles and atoms, also vibrating and emitting a frequency!
Therefore, SOUND Therapy, of any sort, is dealing with the frequency (or sound) of the subject matter, that means YOU!
Frequencies are those things we tend to associate with listening to the radio. We "tune in" to a particular "channel" or "frequency" and we are able to hear music, the news etc. We turn on the TV, and that is also "tuned" to a channel, which transmits a signal, allowing us to watch an image on our screen.
We don't tend to think of our bodies giving off a frequency depending on our health and wellbeing, yet, this would explain many things, including our emotions, and changes of moods. If we keep ourselves healthy, and all the moving (vibrating) parts of our bodies "tuned" we can achieve a calm and healthy existence.
Sound Therapy can help a person to stay "in tune" by gently applying different frequencies to the body, using music, the voice (of the practitioner or the client), musical instruments and so on. Science understands the law that when stronger vibration is applied to a weaker one, the weaker one will eventually alter to match the stronger one. This is called "entrainment" (originally discovered by Hans Jenny a physician who studied wave phenomena, type Hans Jenny and Cymatics into YouTube to discover more!).
We see this in many aspects of life. For example, someone with a strong personality may persuade a weaker person to take action. Listening to relaxing music when stressed eventually helps you to calm down. Listening to the sound of someone drilling the road loudly outside our house, is likely to make you annoyed and on edge!
Likewise Sound Therapy uses sounds to "entrain" a weaker vibration to match the stronger one. If you are unwell or suffering from emotional upset and trauma, your body will be unbalanced and emitting a frequency or collection of frequencies that are keeping you feeling in a negative state. During a Sound Therapy session this would be identified and the practitioner would aim to retune these frequencies to encourage relaxation and healing. When the body is relaxed it is able to retune and heal itself. The work of the client is then to maintain this state, identifying areas of his/her life that cause imbalance and stress.
A wealth of research, particularly that of French acupuncturist and musician Fabien Mamman, shows that the human voice is the most effective and healing tool available to all of us. By 'tuning' and working with our voice, our Sound, we are able to affect our physical body in the most positive of ways, leading to ultimate wellbeing for ourselves and those around us.
